nipple piercing

Hello to all out there,

My wonderful web designer has just got me up and running as a blogger.

I am looking forward to getting started and providing you with evidence based breastfeeding information.

To start I want to share a link to a research letter I wrote a couple of years ago that was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)

http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=184139

I saw 3 mothers within the space of a month that had previously had their right nipple pierced, it resulted in breastfeeding difficulties for them because nipple duct scarring blocked the passage of milk from the breast. I hasten to add I have seen plenty of mothers previous to this and since this that have no problems what so ever.

If you have had a nipple pierced and want to breastfeed this is something to be aware of and if problems emerge seek help as early as possible, to ensure you get the best milk production possible.

To those that are thinking of having their nipple pierced, this new information needs to be considered if  breastfeeding a baby is something you wish to do in the future. To be on the safe side maybe wait until you have had your babies before you get your piercing.
